shep: as house lawmakers inch closer to the final vote for health care reform insurance. we re gauging how americans feel about the bill. laura ingle is here in the studio and has some new polls out. if the bill were to pass as it stands today, majority of americans would not be happy. we have the numbers here to show you. 55% of americans polled stand firmly against the reform bill. 35% favor the bill while 10% are still undecided. what do voters want to see done? half say start over and 30% say they want it passed. we ve got a couple of other things we want to show you. one of the things that democrats are saying is that the health care bill, democrats are saying it will create jobs. 900 people that took the poll, ....
Evening. democrats are making it clear they are confident they have the votes. shep: there has been a lot of talk about the michigan democratic congressman bart stupak? he has said recently 20 minutes he remains a no vote but there is negotiating underway by an executive order by president obama. pro-life democrats are hoping that they will come up with language that will satisfy the most ardent abortion foes. he said he would not vote on the bill because of lack of a ban on abortion related service. he wants a permanent statue auto that will create this. such a thing like an executive order would only last as long as term of the president who signs it. abortion foes believe it won t go the distance. stupak says he remains a no ....
Debate, is what is not in there. the abortion language is not in there. democrats decided they couldn t deal with the issue in the reconciliation bill so that is hard for them to get the 216 votes. they had to deal with abortion separately. it could have been dealt with the reconciliation bill we might have had the vote already. shep: the fact on abortion, what would be allowed is should the mother s life be in danger, or should there have been rape or incest. the insurance policies could have covered for the mom. is that what it was? i think that is part of the discussion. there is a lot of discussion about how and whether any federal money paid for federal abortion to sequester the money. the compromise plan says, you pay with a separate check and separate account and so no taxpayer money would go for abortion. all the money is going in the ....
shep:, republican seniors on the left-hand side of the screen at the top of the protest going on right now outside the capitol. bottom right of the screen is the debate and vote is the important part. we want to keep you informed what is going on. orrin hatch is saying democrats are, quote, nuts on the health care reform issues, something cheofd by republicans in the house. they say they will use every means available to them what they are calling the government takeover of health care. one of the top democrats in the house counter this morning. this is not a government takeover. its creation of open markets with private insurance companies offering insurance to people that don t have it. ....
shep: these negotiations must have been mighty tense? i would say they are intense. within that, there is some tension. last night there was a significant meeting between the deputy chief of staff and bart stew stupak and there has been dialogues going on all afternoon. stupak says she wants to vote for the bill. it s an open question whether an executive order would provide additional assurance on the question of abortion funding. statute rules, legislative language rules in america, not necessarily executive order, particularly on an issue that has been so thoroughly litigated democrats have not issued executive orders, inculcating the hyde amendment saying no funding for abortion services and if president obama were to ....
