Rodgers Rocks The Pack

How’s this for a twist?    Aaron Rodgers wants a divorce
before he gets married.
Yes, before he ties the knot with Shailene Woodley, Rodgers wants to end his 16 year marriage with the Green Bay Packers.   With impeccably explosive timing just hours before the NFL Draft began Thursday night, Rodgers made it perfectly clear through a source to ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he’s become disgruntled with the organization to the point that he doesn’t want to return even with three years left on his contract.
That fueled an avalanche of speculation into the night about the Packers possibly trading the three time and reigning NFL MVP but late Thursday night, General Manager Brian Gutekunst flatly stated, “We’re not going to trade Aaron Rodgers.” ....

The Draft Room Is Open

Gutekunst was quiet in the open free agency market, the only signing this spring was a street free agent long snapper,  Joel Fortunato.   He’s been trying for four years to stick on an NFL roster and will get a chance by competing with incumbent Hunter Bradley.    Yet Gutekunst, and Vice President of Football Operations Russ Ball were very busy in creatively moving money around in a depressed salary cap off-season to keep some of their own free agents from hitting the open market.
Restructured money for David Bakhtiari, Preston Smith, Adrian Amos (twice), Mason Crosby and Za’Darius Smith freed up enough cash to bring back most notably, Aaron Jones on a four year, 48 million dollar deal and Kevin King on a one year, six million dollar contract.  Chandon Sullivan and Marcedes Lewis are coming back on team friendly, one year deals.   All of the restricted free agents, including tight end Robert Tonyan are also coming back. ....

Number Crunching Week

The Green Bay Packers have never really been about backyard kid’s games.  They haven’t played franchise “tag” for over a decade and the organization is often criticized for rarely taking part in kick (the free agency) can.    The Pack may now be forced to play financial hopscotch in the leanest NFL off-season in years.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst let the Monday deadline for applying the franchise tag pass, sending star running back Aaron Jones hurtling toward a big pay day in unrestricted free agency.  They last used the tag back in 2010 for Ryan Pickett.   The 2021 tag tender for a running back is in the neighborhood of 8 to 9 million dollars and that would have pushed the Packers even further into the salary cap hole they find themselves in. ....
