Williams assembles Cup arsenal

Lloyd Williams (Image: Racing Photos) Lloyd Williams quest for an eighth Melbourne Cup later this year gained momentum on Friday with two leading contenders on an incoming flight to Australia while Master of Reality won a stakes race in Northern Ireland. Melbourne Cup candidates Pondus and Dawn Patrol are among nine Williams-owned horses currently en route to Melbourne after flying out of England on Friday. The horses will complete their mandatory 14 days of post-export quarantine at Mickleham before being prepared by Robert Hickmott from Macedon Lodge, the facility where Hickmott trained Green Moon and Almandin to Melbourne Cup success in 2012 and 2016.

Nepean on Point for Lenebane

Point Nepean (Image: @NavanRacecourse Twitter) Joseph O Brien will attempt to win Tuesday s Listed Lenebane Stakes at Ireland s Rosscommon Racecourse with yet another horse owned by Australian interests. O Brien has won the past two editions of the Lenebane with the OTI Racing-owned Downdraft in 2019 and the Lloyd Williams-owned Pondus, who defeated OTI s Jessica Harrington-trained mare Camphor last year. O Brien and Williams, who have combined to win two Melbourne Cups, have representation again in the Lenebane on Tuesday with the aggressively placed Point Nepean. Point Nepean has only raced once, winning his debut in a €12,000 (A$19,000) three-year-old maiden over 2615 metres at Navan on May 30 when confidently supported in betting to overturn odds-on favourite Malawi.

Both trainers only began their training careers in 2020 but have already impacted at Australia’s most famous racetrack.
