Last Saturday, many of the region’s best young male and female soccer players put their skills on display, and looked to parlay their on-field talent into a college scholarship.
A contingent from Grande Prairie Regional College conducted a 3-hour evaluation camp at the North Cariboo Soccer Club as part of their Western Canada recruitment tour that includes stops in Edmonton, Calgary, William’s Lake, Whitehorse and Yellowknife.
Robin Watson, head coach for both the men’s and women’s Grande Prairie soccer teams, said he was impressed with the turnout, that included 27 young men and women from local high schools. ....

T-wolves back Debianchi set green and gold standard


In 2007, UNBC announced it would become a two-sport school, as men’s and women’s soccer programs would be added to the basketball teams, doubling the size of the Timberwolves’ athletic department. The recruiting process began for men’s soccer coach Sonny Pawar, as he looked to build a roster to compete in the B.C. Collegiate Athletic Association. Part of the inaugural recruiting class was an athletic defender who had grown up in the Prince George Youth Soccer Association. Pawar knew getting Scott Debianchi in green and gold was a massive step for the T-wolves.
“Even as a young player, Scott’s technical skill and tactical understanding of the game was well beyond his years,” said Pawar. “He was a shy high school graduate who wasn’t even sure if he would attend university, but he immediately set a standard that reached far beyond the soccer pitch.” ....
