Property owner disappointed with lack of clarity in land purchase process

A developer who owns property north of the Indoor Recreation Centre site says he’s disappointed with city council’s decision to purchase seven acres of land from Signature Developments to build a parking lot, instead of considering his own.
Reg Fontaine, the president and owner of Fontaine Holdings Company Ltd., spoke to council on May 10 asking them to reconsider an offer to purchase his property for the parking lot instead. Fontaine originally had a non-binding agreement with the City to sell 7.78 acres of land north of the site for $2-million. The deal fell through after the City realized it would need to pay additional costs to remove piles of dirt, demolish buildings, and take out an underground septic tank. ....

Council takes step to changing Public Notice Bylaw following complaints about lack of consultation on new developments

Prince Albert city council has voted to change the way it sends out public notices allow more time for community feedback, and increase the number of properties who receive notices about new developments that might be controversial.
Planning and Development Director Craig Guidinger told council it’s no secret the City’s current bylaw has been a controversial topic. On Monday, he submitted a plan that would give residents one month to respond to a proposed development in their neighbourhood, and solicit feedback from residents who live within 150 meters of the property. ....

Discussions surrounding the design of a new arena to replace the Art Hauser Centre will continue at a special council meeting on Monday after the City’s elected officials voted to table the matter on May 3.
Monday’s three item agenda, includes reports on the large arena design, the Indoor Recreation Centre design, and a land acquisition deal to add additional parking. Mayor Greg Dionne said council wanted to deal with the issue at the last council meeting on May 3, but decided to postpone the matter because Couns. Dawn Kilmer and Ted Zurakowski were absent for personal reasons. ....

Council gives final approval to new $35 base tax, rejects amendment to reduce amount for non-profit housing providers

Prince Albert city council voted 8-1 in favour of passing the 2021 Property Tax Bylaw, which includes a new $35 base tax to fund four new sworn officer positions with the Prince Albert Police Force.
They also rejected an amendment that would have seen Prince Albert’s non-profit housing corporations pay a reduced amount.
Mayor Greg Dionne said residents made it loud and clear during the last election that crime was their number one concern, and paying for more police officers is one of several ways they’re looking to address the problem. ....
