Chesapeake Bay area lawmakers urge EPA to enforce pollution standards


Senators from the Chesapeake Bay region are asking the Biden administration to enforce strict water pollution standards in Pennsylvania and New York to help meet previously-agreed goals for restoring the bay.
The lawmakers, all Democrats, told new Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan in a letter last month that efforts to reduce certain Chesapeake Bay pollution sources by 2025 “are at a critical juncture.”
“Our concern has been the state of Pennsylvania has been falling significantly short of the goals that they need to reach in order for us to meet the overall pollution goals for the bay in 2025,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), one of the co-authors of the letter, said in an interview with Capital News Service. ....

Lack of funding, not Lancaster County farmers, to blame for Chesapeake Bay pollution: foundation


That’s especially true on Pennsylvania farmland, including in Lancaster County.
All of that is according to a report released Tuesday by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which noted some improvement in pollution levels but gave the bay a low grade of D-plus — the same grade it got in a previous report issued two years ago.
But Don Ranck, the Lancaster County Farm Bureau’s president, said pollution reduction goals for the bay are unrealistic.
“Yes, farmers want to help. Farmers want to do what s right,” Ranck said. “But we have a goal that is impossible to reach. They set the goal higher than can possibly be reached.” ....
