Bay Area Reporter :: City College staff speak out against layoffs


Members of City College of San Francisco s extended community are speaking out about proposed layoffs that would lead to cuts in classes and programming.
It is anticipated that the college s board of trustees will vote at its May 10 meeting to go forward with the plan. It already approved the sending of layoff notices to 163 faculty members and 34 administrators across 39 departments as a way of dealing with a projected deficit of $33 million.
Now, the faculty union, the American Federation of Teachers Local 2121, and members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors are advocating the city provide emergency funding to the institution, which has struggled with budgetary problems for years. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: City College trustees back CA bill to end deadnaming trans, nonbinary college students


The trustees of City College of San Francisco are calling on state lawmakers to pass a bill that would end deadnaming trans and nonbinary college students on their diplomas and other academic records. The public community college adopted such a policy in 2020.
The community college board unanimously voted 7-0 at its January 28 meeting to adopt a resolution in support of Assembly Bill 245. Trustee Tom Temprano, a gay man who is vice president of the board, introduced it, as the Bay Area Reporter s Political Notebook first reported this week.
Board President Shanell Williams, who is bisexual, and student Trustee Vick Van Chung, who is genderqueer, cowrote the resolution with Temprano. At the meeting the other four trustees asked to be added as cosponsors at the request of Chung. ....
