A veteran Spanish conservative politician is recovering in hospital after being shot in the face on a street in central Madrid. The politician, Alejandro Vidal-Quadras, has told police he suspects his work on behalf of the Iranian opposition has played a role in the murder attempt. Police said there was no evidence backing the Iranian link but it was being considered as a hypothesis. The 78-year-old Vidal-Quadras was a long-time member of Spain’s conservative Popular Party before he broke away to help found the far-right Vox party. The gunshot fractured Vidal Quadras’ jawbone and the politician would undergo surgery. He is in stable condition and his life was not in danger.
