Chicago school board passes $9.3 billion budget for 2022
The Chicago Board of Education approved the school district s budget for the next fiscal year, despite pushback over the timeline to increase staffing and privatization of cleaning and maintenance services.

CHICAGO (CN) The Chicago Board of Education was nearly unanimous Wednesday in approving the school district s fiscal year 2022 budget, in spite of several controversies surrounding its funding allocations.
Six board members voted in favor of the budget while Vice President Sendhil Revuluri abstained. No members voted against it.

In his first school board meeting as interim CEO of Chicago Public Schools, José Torres said he wants the district to prioritize reengaging 100,000 students over the next month who are at risk of leaving the school system largely because of the pandemic.

With a little more than a month before Chicago Public Schools students return to their classrooms, interim CPS CEO Jose Torres has set a new goal for his staff: engage 100,000 kids who are at risk of not re-enrolling in their school.

Speaking Wednesday at his first Board of Education meeting since he was appointed as interim CEO, Torres said the district’s “true north” goal before reopening schools must be to reach these students and make sure they are prepared to return to CPS.
“I need everyone’s help to accomplish that,” he said. “I’m focusing all my energy and efforts to making sure all students and families are ready to go back to school.”
