The San Dieguito Union High School District board approved additional architectural design work aimed at improving its Encinitas district office building, including a reconfigured board room and more efficient workspaces for staff.
At the May 20 meeting, the board authorized an additional $200,000 to Ruhnau Clarke Architects to expand the scope of its architectural designs for the building. The expanded scope would bump the preliminary estimates of the total district office improvements from $2.4 million to $7.5 million. The board only committed to funding the architectural designs, they have not year approved the actual construction. ....

The San Dieguito Union High School District is facing questions about how it is handling public comment, including its recent decision to no longer accept written public comments and an incident when several speakers were cut off mid-comment during a special board meeting.
On Feb. 25, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of San Diego and Imperial Counties wrote a letter to the board and superintendent with concerns that they are unlawfully restricting public comment.
“We write to remind you that a school board may not silence community members engaged in lawful public comment simply because the board dislikes their message,” wrote Melissa Deleon, an equity staff attorney with the ACLU. “If the board is limiting access to public meetings and restricting comments based on the viewpoint expressed, it is viola ....

San Dieguito resolves to open when county moves to red tier

The San Dieguito Union High School District believes they are prepared to safely bring students back when the county is out of the purple tier. For San Dieguito schools to reopen for in-person learning, the county must be in the state’s red tier for five consecutive days. Currently the county is “deep into purple” due to COVID-19 case numbers and the percentage of positive tests.
“The district strongly desires for all students who wish to return for in-person instruction be given the opportunity to do so and is prepared to immediately bring all of those students back to campus as soon as the district is legally able to do so,” stated a resolution passed by the board on Jan. 21. ....

San Dieguito prepares to welcome students back on Jan. 4


Students in the San Dieguito Union High School District will be returning to one-day-a-week instruction on Jan. 4 following the winter break. On Dec. 15, the board voted 3-2 in favor of a resolution that targets an expanded reopening to full-time, five-day-a-week school by the first day of the third quarter on Jan. 27.
At each school site, students have been asked to commit to coming to school one day a week or to remain in distance learning: 42% of students have opted in to return for one day a week at Torrey Pines High School and 56% of students will return at La Costa Canyon. At the academies, new classes start at the beginning of the third quarter so more students have opted to finish their current classes online. On Jan. 4, 31.28% of Canyon Crest Academy students have decided to come back one day a week and 39.3% of students will return at San Dieguito Academy. ....
