In 2022, elementary students in Hazel Dell will attend a new school named for a legal pioneer who charted a historic path in law and spent a career advocating for women’s rights and gender equity.
The Vancouver School Board unanimously voted Tuesday to name its newest elementary school for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the late lawyer and jurist who served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1993 until her death in September.

The Vancouver school board rejected two of the four names brought forth by Columbia River High School’s mascot transition team, and voted 3-1 Tuesday night to send the suggestions back to the committee with a request to consider additional naming options.
Director Kathy Decker voted not to approve the motion.
