Newport-Mesa Unified Supt. Lee-Sung will retire in August, halfway into 2-year contract

Newport Mesa Unified School District Supt. Russell Lee-Sung who took over leadership of the district in the middle of a pandemic amid much controversy announced Wednesday he would retire this summer, after 36 years in public education.
In a letter to the school community, Lee-Sung, 57, explained his more than six years with the district would come to a close effective Aug. 3.
“I have been extremely honored and grateful to serve the Newport-Mesa Unified School District and our school community,” he wrote, recalling a period of leadership marked by a nationwide pandemic that forced the closure of schools and moved thousands of NMUSD students to online learning. ....

Newport-Mesa Unified to return secondary students to full-day classes starting the week of April 26

Responding to parents’ requests to see middle- and high-school students allowed back on campus full time, Newport-Mesa Unified School Districts have approved a return to full-day instruction for secondary students, with some minor modifications, the starting week of April 26.
In a special meeting Thursday evening, Supt. Russell Lee-Sung explained how district officials and site administrators had convened to discuss the option of increasing face time between students and teachers, who’ve been coming to campus part time under a hybrid learning model since November.
“We have done our best in distance learning, but it has its limitations. If we can get kids back to in-person, that is our first objective,” he explained. ....

Ongoing pandemic, resultant school reclosures deepen divisions at Newport-Mesa Unified

As Newport-Mesa Unified School District middle and high school teachers used a non-student day Friday to decompress from a chaotic first semester, on the final work day before winter break district officials sent out a quick communique to the school community.
The message informed district families all secondary students would return to distance learning on the Jan. 4 start of spring semester. A two-month dalliance with in-person learning which saw kids return to campuses under a hybrid schedule would be paused, at least through Jan. 22.
“[A] significant increase of COVID-19 cases throughout the state, Orange County and our local community has impacted our district and workforce, severely limiting our ability to find appropriate substitute employees who provide critical services,” Supt. Russell Lee-Sung explained. ....
