WASHINGTON – There were few protesters, sparse crowds and no violence Wednesday as Joe Biden was sworn in as the nation s 46th president against a backdrop of historic security.  
The inauguration, limited by law enforcement constraints and the coronavirus pandemic, was supplemented by about 25,000 National Guard members who descended on a city already blanketed in state and local law enforcement personnel. The mission was to ensure there was no repeat of the deadly riot that rocked the Capitol and the nation two weeks ago. ....

At least six Republicans won t be attending the swearing-in ceremony for President-elect Joe Biden Wednesday for various reasons.
One has concerns about security after the violent riot that broke out at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Another is recovering from foot surgery. One wants to work on expediting Biden s Cabinet confirmations, and one is quarantining after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus.
It s not shaping up to be the mass boycott seen four years ago, when more than 50 House Democrats didn t show up for the swearing-in of Donald Trump in protest of what they considered his divisive politics. For the Democrats, the coordinated decision not to attend Trump s inauguration came in a wave of statements and tweets. ....

Former President Barack Obama offered warm congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden Wednesday as he prepared to take office.
“Congratulations to my friend, President @JoeBiden! This is your time,” Obama wrote on Twitter.
The 44th president jumped the gun a bit by referring to Biden as president about two hours before he officially takes office.
Obama tweeted a photo of the two allies walking out of the Oval Office when Biden was Obama’s vice president.
Minutes later, Barack and Michelle Obama arrived at the Capitol to attend Biden’s inaugural. ....

WASHINGTON — Nearly four hours after pro-Trump supporters stormed their way into the U.S. Capitol, officials declared the scene secure, but not before one person was killed inside of the Capitol.
