Michael Flynn is back in news with reports he appeared to support a coup in the United States similar to one in Myanmar. Will URI repeal honorary degree?
SOUTH KINGSTOWN Rhode Island native Michael T. Flynn, retired Army general and former national security advisor, is back in the news with reports over the weekend that he seemed to support a military coup in the United States similar to one in Myanmar that recently overthrew the Southeast Asian country’s elected government.
With the headlines comes renewed interest in whether the University of Rhode Island will repeal the honorary degree it gave Flynn seven years ago.
The answer?
“A decision has not yet been made at this time with regard to Lt. General Michael Flynn’s honorary degree from the University,” URI spokeswoman Linda Acciardo wrote in an email to The Journal on Tuesday.

Q&A:
Job?
I was drawn by several factors: URI has a great reputation for its scholarship and the uplift it brings to the state of Rhode Island, including its outstanding work in oceanography and climate, which intersect with my own field of research; I was impressed by the strides URI has made, both in campus infrastructure improvements and academic programs, under the leadership of President Dooley; the community is vibrant and inclusive; and its values and ambition are very much in line with my own vision of an ideal university.
