Upon this rock I will build my church. That’s the first reference to “church” in the Bible, when Jesus declared this in Matthew 16. It’s been a year since congregations have had to rebuild or reinvent church on a new “rock,” as the coronavirus pandemic that forced them in March 2020 to shut sanctuary doors led to new avenues for online or outdoor worship, all in an effort to keep parishioners at home and healthy. While this has been an anxious and stressful time, it also has been a fruitful one — paving the way for new partnerships among ministers and congregations who, being Presbyterian, have always heard of the value of being a “connectional” church, but never fully embraced it. ....

Presbyterian Mission Agency Embracing the 'Holy Saturday' phase of the pandemic

We are in the phase of the pandemic that I call the “Holy Saturday” phase — that day before Easter’s resurrection celebration that is shadowed with the lingering grief of yesterdays gone by and the uneasiness of a still uncertain future. It’s a phase in which through our mourning we start finding the courage to honestly answer the question, “What have we learned in a year of pandemic living?” Our answers might be the very thing that help us step into resurrection’s new day.
For me, I learned never to take toilet tissue for granted. I learned that if the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast and my attempts at breadmaking will fail miserably. I learned that if I want a garden this year, I need to order seeds early because the gardening trend of 2020 shows no signs of abating as people continue to seek healing in the soil for their anxious souls. Yes, se ....

Presbyterian Mission Agency Compassion fatigue in the church | Presbyterian Mission Agency

By Darla Carter | Presbyterians Today
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for more ministries that feed the hungry. But increasing needs can lead to compassion fatigue. Courtesy of the Holy Way Presbyterian Church
A year of shepherding God’s people through a pandemic has put a strain on pastors as they have had to rethink how to do everything from pastoral care to worship. And with more adaptive shepherding to come, especially with medical experts predicting any return to pre-COVID-19 activities won’t be happening till late fall — hopefully — the strain of constantly thinking differently and creatively while tending flocks that are eager for some sense of normalcy can result in developing compassion fatigue. ....

Presbyterian Mission Agency Candlemas, Feb. 2, officially ends the season of Christmas

By Scott Szabo | Presbyterians Today

Early in my ministry I learned that there were worship traditions foreign to the congregation I served and, while I yearned to stretch my “liturgical wings,” I contented myself by researching feast days instead — imagining how they might someday find expression in my pastorate. This is how I discovered Candlemas.
Observed on Feb. 2, Candlemas was traditionally the end of the Christmas season. Today, Epiphany, Jan. 6, is the commonly viewed end of Christmastide. But Candlemas is more than an end mark to Christmas. Simeon’s double-edged oracle of blessing and admonition, which stands at the center of the feast day’s reading from Luke 2:22–40, reminds us that the babe in the manger and the suffering servant are one and the same. Thus, Candlemas is a hinge between the Church’s celebration of Christmas and Easter. ....

Presbyterian Mission Agency Is your digital ministry leaving out people with disabilities?

By Sarah VanderZee McKenney | Presbyterians Today
Here are some interesting statistics that you might not know: In 2018, a Centers for Disease Control report revealed that one in four U.S. adults — 61 million — had a disability. According to the Collaborative on Faith and Disability, 84% of people with disabilities claim a faith tradition that is important to them. Yet, only 10% of faith communities do any congregation-wide disability awareness. This was before the pandemic. Now in a time of digital worship, Bible studies and meetings, being part of a faith community can be more challenging for those living with a disability.
While in theory, technology provides a more accessible way to tune in to worship for some with disabilities, the theory falls short in practice for various reasons. Many people with disabilities are working hard to pay their rent and medical bills, and don’t necessarily have enough money left over for the tools they need to worship digi ....
