Ruby Howell Pratt Tribune After an insanely different fair atmosphere last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pratt County 4-Hers and others who participate in the Pratt County Fair regularly are putting in place place plans for business-as-usual event in 2021. On May 7, the annual small animal weigh-in was held at the fairgrounds. Setting a record-high, 44 sheep and 43 goats were weighed and tagged for fair participation by Pratt County 4-Hers. All 4-H members enrolled in the sheep and goat projects were required to bring their animals to the weigh-in to be eligible to be shown at the Pratt County Fair. Pratt County Extension Agent Jodi Drake said that the animals get an official 4-H e-ID ear tag and they go across the scales. If 4-H members want to show their animals at the Kansas State Fair or the Kansas Junior Livestock Show, they must also nominate their animals by filling out a form, obtaining DNA samples, and submitting a fee to the State Fair of ....
Fran Brownell Pratt Tribune Floodplain management and pipe needed for improved drainage at the Pratt Industrial Park topped the Pratt City Commission agenda at their regular meeting Monday, May 3 at City Hall Commission Chambers. Mayor Gary Schmidt presided with Commissioners Zach Deeds, Jeanette Siemens, Don Peters and Kyle Farmers all in attendance. Lola Shumway, who oversees floodplain management for the city, reviewed with commissioners the proposed 21-page floodplain management ordinance, which was unanimously adopted. Shumway said that the city’s rating will remain at the save level with a ranking of seven, which is a factor in flood insurance rates for property owners. ....
Pratt Tribune The Barron Theater remains an iconic landmark and a hub of Pratt activities in the 21st Century, hosting weekly youth group meetings, weekend movie showings and business and pleasure meetings for groups of all sizes. Built in 1930 to accommodate both stage and film, the former wildly popular WWII GI entertainment venue (for soldiers stationed at the Pratt Army Air Field north of town) has seen minimal changes during required structural improvements over time, but Barron Theater Development Director Sheryl White said she is now hoping the community will come together to raise funds for needed bathroom and carpet updates. ....
