Indonesia banks on outdoor recreation and domestic market for tourism recovery

JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/ANN): Growing outdoor recreation and domestic travel are expected to drive the recovery of tourism in Indonesia, experts and industry players have said.
“[The tourism recovery] will start with adventure, cultural interactions, outdoor or sports activities, ” said Muhammad Baiquni, a tourism expert from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) on Dec 17,2020.
“[Outdoor recreation] includes beaches, villages and forests.”
A survey conducted by the Kompas research and development team from July to August of last year, which involved 1,200 respondents, found that most Indonesians would prefer to visit outdoor destinations. ....

Bali to reopen for int'l tourism, if situation allows


The government is preparing to reopen Bali to international tourism, but the plan hinges on the island’s COVID-19 situation, a ministry spokesman has said.
Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry spokesman Prabu Revolusi said the government aimed to be ready to reopen tourism on the island at any time but that COVID-19 remained the main consideration.
“We are prepared, but it’s just about how Bali can control COVID-19 cases,” Prabu told The Jakarta Post on Dec. 11, adding that no date had been set for the reopening.
Bali confirmed 72 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the cumulative case count to 15,433, according to data from the national COVID-19 task force. ....
