A program that supports the installation of 2,000 new charging stations at apartment and work complexes throughout San Diego was just approved by the California Public Utilities Commission. Introduced by San Diego Gas and Electric, the $43.5 million electric vehicle infrastructure program will build off a successful pilot program launched in 2016.
“This decision is another step toward meeting California’s deep decarbonization and ambitious transportation electrification goals,” the program summary said.
The Power Your Drive program “sets an equity requirement that 50 percent of sites be in underserved communities,” according to the program’s summary. While the pilot program installed over 3,000 charging stations at apartments and work complexes in a three-year p ....

The California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday gave the green light to San Diego Gas & Electric, allowing the utility to proceed with a second round of its “Power Your Drive” program that will construct electric vehicle charging stations at sites across the region.
But the OK came with a few provisions, including a requirement that SDG&E pay for a third-party audit after the first phase of the project racked up cost overruns of $25 million.
Approving the extension “is a small but really essential step in ensuring California is prepared for rising electric vehicle charging demand, which we so much need to do,” commission President Marybel Batjer said just before the 5-0 vote. ....

The Utility Reform Network reacts to SDGE EV program budget -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) –  In authorizing the Power Your Drive pilot program in 2016, the Commission included a $45 million budget limit that only authorized SDG&E spend up to that amount. SDG&E spent over $70 million on the pilot program.
Staff attorney for The Utility Reform Network (TURN), Elise Torres, joined Good Morning San Diego to discuss the program.
It’s TURN’s understanding that SDG&E first notified the Commission and parties of the $25 million (55%) cost overrun in May of 2019, after the funds had already been spent.
SDG&E has not yet sought recovery of the extra costs from ratepayers but has not ruled this out as an option. ....
