Opposition takes govt to task over power price hike Stages protest after speaker allowed power minister to take floor PHOTO: APP/FILE ISLAMABAD: The opposition and government lawmakers in the National Assembly traded barbs on Friday during a debate on rising inflation, particularly power price hike in the country. Taking the floor, former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said Prime Minister Imran Khan during his marathon sit-in in 2014 burned electricity bills and asked the people not to pay power bills in protest against a raise in power tariff during the PML-N rule. “Mr Speaker, should we pay electricity bills now or not given the fact that the PTI government has recently increased power prices,” said Ashraf, who belongs to the PPP. Speaker Asad Qaisar replied that it is the legal and ethical responsibility of every citizen to pay bills. ....
They also demanded 25pc increase in their salaries. Officials of the capital administration and police said the protest was concluded after a delegation of protesters met with the Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan who assured them that the authority will not be privatised and there will be no downsizing. The decision over an increase in salary will be taken up in the upcoming cabinet meeting, he informed the delegation. During the protest, an official from Wapda, identified as Riaz Khan, native of Rawalakot, suffered a cardiac arrest, officials of the capital administration and police said, adding he was shifted to Poly Clinic where he passed away. ....

He maintained that the burden of indirect taxes falls on the poorest sections, so special attention should be paid to reduce the burden. At the same time, the prime minister directed the economic team to come up with suggestions to reduce taxes on goods, so that relief could be provided to people, especially the poor and the middle class. He was presiding over a meeting of the government economic team, which considered possible measures to reduce the prices of basic necessities and provide relief to the common man.
