and it s called desert view because when you look to the east, you are looking out into the painted desert. you can see a little bit of it beyond the watchtower. this is one quarter of the way into the grand canyon, starting 70 miles east of here. from here it has another 200 miles to run to the west. right here is when the canyon starts to widen and deepen and turn into classic views you see in most photographs or calendars or famous images. before now it is a much narrower gorge and when it reaches desert view is about 10 miles wide and a mile deep and has another 200 miles to run to the west before it ends up at lake mead. the colorado river runs all the way from the rocky mountains to between california and arizona as it heads south. you can see the tower over there, the desert view watchtower, and it is a tribute to the hopi tribe. it is not there to see the canyon better. it is 70 feet tall, so you get a slightly better view from the top, but it is really a monument to
