UKZN Phd student develops lightning warning system for rural communities

Durban - A University of KwaZulu-Natal PhD student has developed a near-real-time lightning warning system (NRT-LWS) for rural communities in South Africa.
Maqsooda Mahomed, who is from the School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences, presented her research project at the UKZN Postgraduate Research and Innovation Symposium last week.
“South Africa has one of the highest incidences of lightning-related injuries and deaths in comparison to the rest of the world,” she said.
Mahomed said it was a cause for concern that South Africa was already a lighting-prone country with increased activity because of climate change, and projections showed a further increase in lightning activity. ....

Cape hospital admissions increase by 409%

COVID-19 admissions in the Western Cape have pushed up by 409%. Earlier this week, on Thursday, December 10, Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize also noted the province as one of the key drivers in the country’s second wave. Other provinces that are accounting for the highest numbers include the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Speaking at a digital press conference hosted on Thursday, The Western Cape’s Head of Health Dr Keith Cloete said that there has been an average increase of 53.4% in new cases. The majority of these cases are no longer originating from the Garden Route, but instead from the Cape Metro. ....
