Held a hearing on the growing problem of individuals buying illicit opioids over the internet and shipping them to the United States through the mail. The Opioid Crisis, sadly, continues to get worse, not better. Last month, the center for Disease Control reported that more than 63,000 americans died in 2016 from Drug Overdoses. Indications are that number increased in 2017. These Overdose Deaths are shocking. The number of deaths continue to grow. My own home state of ohio, we were told recently is now second in the country in terms of Overdose Deaths. Its heartbreaking. And increasingly, these overdoses are due to a synthetic heroin, illegal versions of fentanyl, a drug that is 50 to 100 times stronger than heroin. In fact, in ohio, fentanyl and its variations were involved in 60 of the Overdose Deaths last year. So, its become the number one killer in ohio. The vast majority of illegal fentanyl is purchased online from labs in china and then shipped to the United States through the
It seems that north korea, this situation, is getting pretty grave. We are just in the early stages of executing. Very deliberate strategy. Are spending much time at all training for the crater. I think it gets back to how we tend to want to remember this story. The story of the black Union Soldier is front and center. I couldnt be happier about that. I think theres been a danger in the way the story has been pushed over the last few years. It is the moral narrative of our civil war memory. We want to correct for forgetting about them for so long. I think we tend to gloss over some of the darker sides of black soldiers. I dont think were comfortable talking about black soldiers massacrering others. That doesnt fit into our minds right now. I think we want to believe if those black regiments had been allowed to lead the assault that would have been it. We can imagine black soldiers charging over brandfield hill into petersberg. Thats a very soothing image. Anyone who has studied civil war battles, theres nothing that goes as planned. Is there any surprise given this massive detonation. No one can really predict what it will
