Prime ministers, ministers, members of the European Parliament, trade unionists and workers from essential sectors took part in a live hybrid event - From Gothenburg to Porto: The Path Towards a Social Europe - to discuss the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights. Through the Pillar, socialists and democrats are working to end child poverty, gender inequality and work-related deaths in Europe, and secure decent jobs, fair wages and a ‘Right to Disconnect’ for all citizens. The Porto Social Summit, convened by Prime Minister António Costa, is an opportunity to put Europe on a fairer path. ....

EP President David Sassoli, Employment Committee Chair Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová (ECR, SK) and several other MEPs will participate in the Porto Social Summit on 7 May. The Porto Summit, organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council, will give political impetus to the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan. The Social Summit’s first event will be a high-level conference to discuss how to reinvigorate the European Social Model and put the principles of the Pillar into action to benefit EU citizens. Parliament played an important role in preparing the Action Plan by adopting its report on “A strong social Europe for Just transitions” last year. Rapporteurs Dennis Radtke (EPP, DE) and Agnes Jongerius (S&D, NL) will present Parliament’s position on the panel on work and employment. ....
Former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker believes that Portugal will be able to achieve concrete results at the Porto Social Summit, commenting that if Prime Minister António Costa is not successful, “no one will be, because he is one of the best”. In an interview with Lusa, Juncker, host of the first European summit devoted to social affairs in 1997, said he had good expectations for the Porto Summit on 7 May. He acknowledged, though, that the conclusions adopted by European leaders are often forgotten – as happened in 1997 when it was decided to hold an annual summit devoted to social issues. The next one took place only 20 years later, in Sweden. ....
