Book review: Intoxicating by Max Allen

It’s been assumed by most of us that Aboriginal Australians never drank alcohol before white European settlers/invaders arrived in 1788. But, as Max Allen writes in his latest book, this is not true.
Allen isn’t the first to record this fact: Aboriginal historians and elders have known it for a long time, but it never penetrated the public (read: white) consciousness. It suited the white man to circulate the idea that Aboriginal problems with alcohol were due to the fact that they had no history of alcohol in their own culture and couldn’t handle it when Europeans introduced them to it. It’s a fascinating and engrossing book, superbly written as we’ve come to expect from Max Allen, and I highly recommend it. ....

LARGE swells outside the Port Phillip Heads two weeks ago also saw surfable waves at Portsea front beach.
While surfers enjoyed the rare chance to ride a wave near Portsea pier and within sight of its beachfront hotel, the incoming swells also revived concerns about the beach’s loss of sand and the increase of sand at nearby Point King beach. ....

Even today, the treacherous beaches and rocky coastline of Point Nepean are closed to the public, and with good reason.
Rough seas and dangerous currents swirl around Point Nepean and The Rip, the narrow entrance to Port Phillip between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale that is bedevilled by huge tidal surges and submerged rocks and reefs.
The most famous event in Point Nepean s history happened on December 17, 1967, when then-Prime Minister Harold Holt took a pre-lunch swim with friends at Cheviot Beach, one of his favourite swimming and snorkelling locations, and disappeared into the boiling surf. ....
