Service projects planned in honor of MLK day

Monday is Martin Luther King Junior day and students in the Port Huron Area School District will spend the holiday learning about the legacy of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement. Elementary school students will host volunteer members of the Port Huron branch of the NAACP who will read selected books, followed by engaging discussions. Students in Middle and High School will participate in a community service project at area non profits including the Blue Water Rescue Mission, New Life Women's Mission, Carolyn's Place, Pathways Homeless Shelter and Harbor for Youth. Superintendent Theo Kerhouals says MLK day is an important time to, "Not only learn about Dr. King's remarkable work but also participate in projects that provide something of value to the community." ....

Local school districts react to Oxford shooting

The aftermath of the tragic Oxford High School shooting has prompted action from areas school district administrators. Dozens of Metro Detroit area school districts have canceled classes this week as a precaution after receiving "copy cat" threats. Locally, the Port Huron Area School District stated that there is no current threat to the district's schools, students or staff. In a post to social media, the district states that they are, "Monitoring activity, behavior and other indicators very closely." ....
