Shreveport hosted the Bayou Classic football game on Saturday, April 17, which is the biggest football rivalry in Historically Black College or University (HBCU) history. The football game is normally held in New Orleans each year, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the legendary football game was held at the Independence Stadium. The Southern University Jaguars dominated the field with a 49-7 victory over the Grambling State University Tigers and earned a full year of bragging rights. In celebration of the game, Port City Fest was created to promote an extended weekend of events, April 15-18. Because of the Bayou Classic football game and more than 20 events jampacked in one weekend, there was an uptick in Shreveport-Bossier tourism. ....
SHREVEPORT, La - The City of Shreveport says hosting Bayou Classic and Port City Fest was the first big step to rebuilding the local economy. âWe are looking at 2021 to be a revitalization year for our city,â said Mayor Adrian Perkins.âOur community has been forced to overcome unprecedented challenges over the past year. As we make tremendous gains in our fight against COVID-19, we must prepare for the future and build a stronger financial outlook for our citizens.â City officials say the Port City Fest events like Party on the Red hosted by Rho Omega & Friends and the Classic Business Expo organized by the Shreveport-Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce garnered more than 4,000 attendees with no major incidents. ....
SHREVEPORT, La- There was quite the crowd in the Shreveport-Bossier area during Port City Fest. For businesses working through the pandemic, that is a good thing. Shawn Feaster, co-owner of Retro Downtown Barbecue, agrees that the fest was a boost for his business. âIt was busier this weekend than usual. It worked out pretty good for us down here,â said Feaster. During Port City Fest, some local businesses benefitted big time. At the Jump Off, located near Independence Stadium, Saturday was a big day for them. âOur projection goal was met at 1 pm. Unlike any other day, the projection goals will be made at the end of the night,â said the owner at The Jump Off. ....
