Senate invites Dominguez, DOJ in hearing on pork importation next week

The Senate Committee of the Whole will hold another hearing on the issue of pork importation in the Philippines on Tuesday following President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to give Executive Order 128 a chance.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III confirmed the schedule of the hearing and disclosed that Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez IIII and the Department of Justice have been invited.
“I will convene the resumption of the [Committee of the Whole] on Tuesday and invite [Secretary] Dominguez to elaborate on his letter for the benefit of all senators. [Department of Agriculture and [Department of Justice are] also invited,” Sotto said in a text message to reporters. ....

At least 30 million kilos of pork may have been smuggled to the Philippines last year, Senator Francis Pangilinan said Wednesday.
In a statement, Pangilinan, himself a former food security secretary, noted the discrepancy in the pork import figures of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and those of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) for 2020.
He said that BOC data show that more than 225 million kilos of pork with a value of over P16 billion was imported in 2020, while the BAI, which conducts meat inspection, reported over 256 million kilos of pork imports for the same year. ....

Senate OKs reso calling probe into food security crisis, ‘tongpats’ on pork imports

The Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling on the Committee of the Whole to conduct an investigation into the food security crisis in the country brought about by the African swine fever (ASF) problem.
During the resumption of its session, the chamber adopted Senate Resolution 685, which also urges the Committee of the Whole to look into allegations of tongpats, or padded costs on pork imports from which unscrupulous individuals within the Department of Agriculture (DA) could earn at least P6 billion. ....
