CAB issues SOS after Hamilton City Council funding slashed

The council’s funding for the organisation was vital, she said. It received no funding from central government, and other funding from philanthropic organisations such as the Gallagher Family Foundation, the Len Reynolds Trust and the DB Bryant Trust had either been recently terminated or was otherwise not guaranteed.
The reduction meant the organisation would likely have to shut up shop within two years, she said.
It was an unpalatable situation to be facing in the year of the organisation’s fiftieth anniversary.
“It’s been like a kick in the guts,” Yorston told the community committee on Thursday.

Māori wards 'natural' next step in Hamilton

Thompson-Evans is one of five Maangai Māori appointed to council committees. The five appointees are chosen by Waikato-Tainui and Urban Māori authority Te Runanga Ō Kirikiriroa. Maangai Māori have full voting rights at the committee level but don’t sit on the full council.
Thompson-Evans said public discussion around Māori wards and Māori representation on council wouldn’t be new in Hamilton given its adoption of Maangai Māori.

On Wednesday, the council will publicly launch its draft document He Pou Manawa Ora – Pillars of Wellbeing at the Te Parapara Garden. The document lays out a strategy for the council to engage and strengthen its relationship with Māori. The public will have until March 4 to provide feedback on the document. ....
