Local heroes of the pandemic presented with Somerset Medal A select few of Somerset’s many unsung coronavirus heroes have been presented with awards as the first ever winners of the Somerset Medal. The Somerset Medal was launched by Somerset County Council to say a heartfelt thank-you to the best of the best, with the winners honoured at a special reception at Taunton Rugby Club this week. Somerset’s Lord Lieutenant Annie Maw spoke at the start of the ceremony before the medals were presented by Council Vice Chair Councillor Mark Keating. Those honoured included local vaccination volunteers, food deliverers, PPE producers, pop-up shop keepers and a whole host of other good Samaritans who all went above and beyond to make sure Somerset kept going during the pandemic. ....

West Country-born chef Harriet Mansell has relaunched her Lyme Regis pop-up Robin Wylde as a permanent restaurant that shines a light on the region’s local ingredients. Harriet Mansell had some ideas about what she wanted to call her first restaurant, but one thing for sure was that she didn’t want it to be named after herself. “I sometimes tell people I didn’t want my ex-boyfriend to know I was back in the area,” says the West Country-born chef with a chuckle. “In reality, though, it just would have been too conventional to put my own name on the door.” ....

We ll try and get a couple of questions with him. as you mentioned, there are thousands of federal workers who are hurting in states like virginia and maryland and here in the nation s capital, steps away from the white house and capitol hill. this morning they were lining up outside this resource center next door to chef jose andres pop-up kitchen were they re now able to get everything from toiletries to pet food to help paying their utility bills. the speaker, as you mentioned, paid a visit to the volunteers here. i pressed her on if there was anything from the bill that mitch mcconnell introduced in the senate that she would be willing to support. she instead chose to focus on the effort here. but so many of the workers, the federal workers here showing some signs of frustration, namely forrest pitt, the gentleman whose interview you played, saying all eyes are on washington and we want all of this to be over and to be able to get back to work. i ll see if i can grab senator ....
