So weve had to take Tough Decisions to stabilise the economy. Its already a familiar Refrain Keir Starmer saying hes going to make choices that seem uncomfortable in order to change the country. Top of the list of difficult decisions, targeting the Winter Fuel Payment at only the poorest pensioners. That is not easy, and no Prime Minister wants to take a decision like this, but the Winter Fuel Payments are now to be targeted, they were untargeted before, and i think everybody thought that wasnt a particularly good system. This year, around 10 Million pensioners in england and wales will no longer receive the allowance of up to £300, which the treasury suggests will save around 1. 4 billion. the appeal that they made? well, anderson, one of the first things that the president s lawyers take on is the idea that he is an insurrectionist, which is something that the colorado supreme court had ruled. they say he is not, that the january 6th attack was not an insurrection, and that the former president did not engage in insurrection. they also say that the congress, not state courts, should be the ones that determine the eligibility for the presidency. they also say that the 14th amendment, the letter, if you read the 14th amendment, section three, it doesn t mention the office of the presidency and it doesn t apply, they say, to the former president. i will read you a little more of what they argue. they say that this colorado ruling, if allowed to stand, will mark the first time in the history of the united states the judiciary has prevented voters from casting ballots for the leading major party presidential candidate. and obviously, that is what is at stake her
before the u.s. defaults. not everyone is confident a deal can be reached, with at least one top republican negotiator warning a deal could come together as soon as today or fall apart entirely. what is the mood on capitol hill right now? reporter: good afternoon. the mood is more optimistic than we ve heard in days. negotiators here this morning are saying they think they re closing in on a deal and really it s all about having an agreement on the agreement and hashing out the remaining sticking points, which we re told are on work requirements and spending caps. we heard speaker mccarthy came to the capitol shortly before 10:30 a.m. this morning. he says he feels more confident than he has and they ve made progress, but some sticking points remain. i asked him if he thinks he would be able to get his full conference behind whatever deal they re able to strike, and he said he does think that will happen. he also said he thinks a deal could potentially come together as earl
hello, everyone. thanks for joining me this saturday. i m fredricka whitfield. we begin this hour in washington where right now negotiators are back at the table as they race to end the debt ceiling standoff. republican leaders and white house officials are returning a short time ago, after a marathon session lasted well into the night, the clock is ticking, to get a deal in place, before the u.s. defaults on its loans. the national deficit continues to soar. with no rise to the borrowing limit, the u.s. will default on its loans which could be catastrophic to the economy. the treasury secretary now is saying the deadline for an agreement is just eight days away. but talks are teetering on the brink, with at least one top republican negotiator warning that a deal could come together as soon as today, or fall apart entirely. cnn is following the latest. good morning. you re on capitol hill, and you spoke to the house speaker kevin mccarthy. what did he say? is he optimistic?
