Assam government to introduce bill in state assembly to ban polygamy

The Assam government plans to introduce a Bill in December to ban polygamy, the practice of marrying multiple spouses. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a legal committee has received positive thoughts on the ban and is drafting the Bill. Assams Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced that a bill to end polygamy will be introduced within the current financial year after an expert committee confirmed that the state does possess the power to draft such laws. The president is expected to give assent to any legislation, rather than the governor.
