so you re having a party and this artificial rule culling the herd. i don t think that s democratic with a small d. at the same time there s nobody who thinks having two nights with more than ten people each night is a good thing or the party or good thing for any of the people who might eventually be the candidate. so, again, i m bothered by it a little bit but i also think it s better for the democratic party. we go through the list, by the way, candidates who were there this week, seth wasn t there this week, doesn t look like he will be in september. tom steyer, the billionaire who started putting tons of money into early state ads, it s not impossible he will reach the polling threshold, that s another name you can put in the mix. there s even joe stes ak, who ran for senate in pennsylvania. he s not going to make it, i promise. mike ravel probably won t make it too. i will give you that one. let me put this on the table, the candidates in that group
back. like, we all know who joe biden is. i m not sure last night changed anyone s opinion as to who joe biden is. why is it funny to you? it s funny because, you know, we hype up the debates and the narratives that develop out of the debates and then to see that joe biden to snap back to where he was and everyone snap back to where they were, i think people s perception of the candidates is very resilient. number one, based on what you said last night, would you support any of the democrats who wins the nomination if it s not you? the plan is to beat donald trump in 2020 and i would prefer any democrat over donald trump in 2020. and the second thing is, where do you stand right now in terms of making the debate stage in september? you ve met the donor threshold, correct? yeah. and we thought we had the polling threshold. but we re going to be on the debate stage in september and october. we re already past the donor threshold and will be past the polling threshold probably
constituency that important, would you have to get votes there. do we suspect after the second debate we ll see one or two more candidates drop out of this thing? i think we ll see a lot more than one or two drop out. i can quickly show you, anybody who s sitting here, bennet, gillibrand, de blasio, williamson, riley, hickenlooper, all of them are in grave danger of not hitting the polling threshold for the fall debates. if they don t make a move off this debate, they may all be gone. thank you, my friend. enjoy the weekend. i want to bring in eugene scott and also a former adviser to hillary clinton s 2016 campaign in the great state of south carolina. i ll start with you, eugene. what will you be looking for in the dynamic between vice president biden and senator harris in this second debate? i ll primarily be looking for vice president biden to be prepared. he said he was not prepared for
fund-raising quarter closed it just wasn t there. and if we didn t see a path to winning, there was no other reason to stay in. so i want to narrow this field and let others have their shot so we can get a nominee who can beat donald trump. as you talk about the fund-raising but also the people on that debate stage. i just went through some of those numbers. together democrats raised twice what trump individually raised in this quarter. but he brought in, you know, more than twice what any individual democrat has. so it s broken up among a lot of different people. do more democrats need to follow your lead, congressman, and get out of the race, get off that debate stage, so you can get a nominee? you know, it s a really personal decision, erin. and i would just say i support the democratic party process led by tom perez, which is to narrow the field and raise the threshold. i do think as time marches on as we go to this july debate and the september debate and the polling threshold
so then there are tie-breaker scenarios for candidates that might if 22 meet the threshold, then what s the tiebreaker? then we will look at first of all, if you there are two thresholds for the viewers. there is a polling threshold of 1%, or you have gotten 65,000 grassroots donor, including at least 200 from 20 states. that s the 1971 campaign finance laws about public financing and we modernized them. we didn t just pull that out of thin air. right. and so those are the two criteria. if somebody has reached both, they will make the debate stage. and 14 out of the 20 that you saw the last two nights did both, including all of the female candidates and all of the candidates of color, i would note.
