LAKELAND When Democrats recaptured the U.S. Senate last week, a Lakeland woman could claim at least a sliver of credit. Taylor Aguilera spent more than a month working in Georgia, leading a team devoted to registering voters and encouraging them to vote in the runoff election for the state’s two Senate seats. The team worked for a progressive organization that endorsed the two Democratic candidates. Those candidates, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, claimed narrow victories last week, creating a 50-50 partisan tie in the Senate and effectively giving Democrats control as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will vote to break ties. ....
Polk County s three U.S. representatives fled the House chambers in the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon as a mob infiltrated the building that signifies American democracy. The violent intrusion occurred while representatives were in the midst of debating a challenge from some Republican members over the certification of Electoral College votes from Arizona. That was expected to be the first of several objections Republicans would make. That would have been unusual enough, but the afternoon turned horrific as protesters many of them carrying flags in support of President Donald Trump broke into the Capitol and breached the chambers of the House and Senate. ....
LAKELAND U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, one of Polk County’s three U.S. House members, is calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office before his term ends in less than two weeks. Soto, a Kissimmee Democrat, spoke a day after what he called an “armed insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The attack by Trump loyalists following his speech at a rally interrupted congressional debate on certifying the results of the presidential election. Soto and other representatives and senators were forced to flee their chambers as a mob broke into the Capitol, committing vandalism and violence that led to five deaths, as of Friday, including a Capitol police officer. ....
