Yemeni leader slams Iran's 'blatant' meddling


AL-MUKALLA: Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi has accused the Iranian regime of becoming more blatant in its support for the Houthis while undermining peace initiatives to end the war in the country.
During a meeting with Martin Griffiths, the UN Yemen envoy, in Riyadh on Wednesday, Hadi said that the presence of the Iranian ambassador to the Houthis in Sanaa violates diplomatic and international norms and laws, and reveals Iran’s unashamed support of the Houthis. 
According to the official news agency SABA, Hadi told the UN mediator that the Iranians directed the Houthis to stage the deadly attack on Aden airport last week and other attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, aiming to ruin peace efforts and undermine peace and stability in Yemen.  ....

Last week, the United Kingdom (UK) moved forward with its first inoculations of the approved Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The United States (US) approved the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Friday, 11 December, and will begin inoculations this coming week. The European Union (EU) continues to stress safety over speed in its vaccine approval process and has yet to follow suit.
The UK sealed the deal on a number of Free Trade Agreements, while talks with the EU continue without any significant breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the UK and EU are also preparing for a possible hard exit scenario.
This past week, Poland and Hungary reached a compromise with the EU on the custom union’s Budget and Recovery Fund, which will allow funds to flow at the start of the new year. The 116th US Congress, meanwhile, continues negotiations over a new COVID relief package, amid other priorities before adjourning. ....

Treasury Sanctions Serious Human Rights Abusers on International Human Rights Day

Designations target human rights abusers in Haiti, Yemen, and Russia 
WASHINGTON– Today, on International Human Rights Day, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is targeting perpetrators of serious human rights abuse across several countries in the Western Hemisphere, Middle East, and Eurasia. Today’s actions are taken pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13818, which builds upon and implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, and targets perpetrators of serious human rights abuse and corruption. OFAC is also concurrently designating one Yemeni individual pursuant to E.O. 13611, “Blocking Property of Persons Threatening the Peace, Security, or Stability of Yemen.” ....
