We begin this afternoon with the clash of two statements, one delivered by a man whos enjoying some of the high he is Approval Ratings of his career. The other delivered by a thirdrate actor who is trying desperately to put a new phase on some tired old policies. The subject, a socalled sequester that will trigger is trillion dollars in spending cuts in less than four weeks. But weve also seen the effects that political dysfunction can have on our economic progress. That, of course, was the president seeking to protect a fragile recovery from falling back into recession if the sequester is allowed to occur. And then there was Speaker Boehner. The house on two occasions has passed a plan to replace the sequester. Its time for the Senate Democrats to do their work. Its time for the president to offer his ideas. Its ha ....
Its not the right thing for folks out there still looking for work. Our economy right now is headed in the right direction. And it will stay that way as long as there arent any more selfinflicted wounds coming out of washington. This selfinflicted wound would include massive cuts to virtually every government program. From medicare and housing to head start and food aid for children. The president wants republicans to delay those cuts through a balanced approach that would force corporations and the wealthy to give up some of their special tax break. And pay their fair share. These modest reforms in our social Insurance Programs have to go hand in hand with tax reform. So the wealthiest individuals and corporations cant take advantage of loopholes and deductions that arent available to most americans. The clock is now ticking on what many economists say is a nearcertain double dip recession if more than a trillion dollars in automatic spending and defense cuts are allowed to occur at the beginning of next month.
