April 16, 2021 One of the big guns at CBS News could be heading to Mount Airy soon for a special report by the television network on this city’s Mayberry connection and its identification with recent national events. This concerns a project involving longtime correspondent Ted Koppel which has been in the works for months. It is targeted for “CBS News Sunday Morning,” a news magazine program on the air for more than 40 years. Dustin Stephens, a producer for that show, said in January that its focus on “Mayberry” is part of the TV network’s ongoing coverage of a unique period for the nation. ....
April 10, 2021 DOBSON Unlike COVID-19, no vaccine is available for the roadside litter epidemic but Surry County officials are trying to remedy the problem on multiple fronts. “We do appreciate any efforts citizens take to help clean up our roadways,” county government spokesman Nathan Walls commented Thursday in conjunction with recent announcements involving four separate initiatives. This includes the county’s participation in the Litter Sweep program of the N.C. Department of Transportation, which began Saturday and will run through April 24. It is focused on collecting trash along roadways. Local volunteers are invited to get involved by obtaining cleanup supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests from the DOT’s county maintenance yard office at 1975 Prison Camp Road in Dobson. This can be done from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. ....
• A $500 handgun has been reported stolen in Mount Airy, according to city police reports. The crime was discovered Sunday at the home of Michael Gerald Kightlinger on South Gilmer Street, where the Glock 9mm weapon with night sights was removed from his unsecured Ford pickup along with other property of Kightlinger’s including a Streamlight tactical pistol light and 15 rounds of 9mm hollow-point ammunition. The items taken were valued at $635 altogether. • Jennifer Nichole Sawyers, 42, of 1208 Newsome St., was served with a criminal summons for a larceny charge Sunday after officers encountered her during a civil disturbance call at a residence on Northwood Drive. The summons had been issued through the Surry County Sheriff’s Office on March 12 with Robert Shane Webb of Northwood Drive as the complainant. ....
