Officials heaved a sigh of relief with the completion of the third phase of panchayat elections peacefully on Wednesday in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
In the backdrop of violence in Nimmada village during the first phase and arrest of TDP-A.P. president K. Atchannaidu, Srikakulam district administration took special care to ensure peaceful polling in the Palakonda division. Mild tension prevailed during campaigning at Togaram village where Tammineni Vani, wife of Speaker Tammineni Sitharam, contested with the support of the ruling YSR Congress Party. However, the situation was under control on the day of polling. Nine mandals, including Palakonda, Ponduru, Amadalavalasa, Burja, Sarubujjili and Bhamini recorded 80.13% polling. Around 82% polling was registered in Vizianagaram district. The second phase was conducted mostly in tribal areas of Parvatipuram division of Vizianagaram district. Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner N. Ramesh Kumar has said that the commission would keep a watch on the unanimous local body polls closely in the wake of many complaints from the opposition parties and other organisations.

Visakhapatnam Range Deputy Inspector General L.K.V. Ranga Rao on Thursday asked the police personnel to utilise technology at optimum level for investigation of cases.
He said that constant efforts were needed to develop skills to meet national and international standards in investigation. Along with Vizianagaram District Judge G. Gopi, he formally launched Police Duty Meet here for the police officials of Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ranga Rao said that the technology would help collection of evidences.
