Climate change now so extreme it s shifting the Earth off its axis say scientists New data from NASA’s twin Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment probes has revealed that melting polar icepacks have shifted the planet s centre of gravity – causing it to wobble on its axis The shift in Earth s rotational axis is in addition to an expected magnetic pole flip (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) The Daily Star s FREE newsletter is spectacular! Posted: Thursday, May 6, 2021 13:29 You may not know it, but the GPS system in your car, and the apps in your phone depend on the magnetic field of the Earth. But what happens if that field moves? As aviation and marine and all navigation systems also depend on it, potentially there could be trouble. Well the field is on the move, and a new study suggests human activity is likely behind it. In our terms, i.e. the average citizen, that movement is not really noticeable at all, but for navigation it is very important, and in scientific terms, it’s huge. ....
Climate Change Has Shifted the Axis of the Earth New research says that the redistribution of water thanks to glacial melting driven by climate change has been causing the Earth to shift on its axis. Image Credit: Song about summer/Shutterstock.com
The catastrophic effects of climate change on our planet cannot be overstated. But, new research shows that these effects could be even more fundamental than we previously knew. The melting of glaciers brought about by global warming could have actually been causing shifts in the Earth’s axis of rotation. That is the conclusion of a new study that finds glacial melting has been the cause of movement in the Earth’s poles since the 1990s. ....
