you can watch more of our visits at c-span.org/cities our. welcome to san luis obispo, located halfway between los angeles and san francisco. this city of about 48,000 residents sits along california s central coast. with help from our cable partners for the next hour we ll visit several sites in the city and surrounding area. including the adobe and the lighthouse. we begin with a visit to mission san luis obispo, which is where the city originates rom. [bell ringing] [bell ringing] when the franciscan missionaries were sent from mexico into upper california, they were told to go to specific locations and establish missions which would in turn become pueblos. the spanish term for self-governing community, become a civic center of sorts. so san luis obispo essentially grew out of the mission. this is mission san luis obispo which was founded in 1772 by a father. will you see the statue at all 21 of the california missions. even missions that the father didn t start. thi
