Brazilian conservatives fail to see funny side of Pope's joke about country's love of booze

Like many other remarks that spark controversy, no offence was intended. But a quip by Pope Francis about Brazilians drinking too much has upset the country's conservatives, who have declined to see the funny side of a man they view as a "communist". The row broke out after the Pope made a joke about Brazilians' fondness for cachaça, a fiery spirit made from fermented sugar cane juice. Delivering a blessing to a Brazilian priest at the Vatican, he told Father João Paulo Victor: "There is no salvation for you. Too much cachaça and not enough praying.” While many Brazilians greeted the remark with good humour, it did not amuse Brazilian conservatives. When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez co-sponsored the Green New Deal in 2019, most people ridiculed the plan as the ravings of a misguided millennial. The measures seemed outlandish in the face of an economy built on fossil fuels, unlimited travel, and global abundance. Many dismissed her notions as political fantasy.
However, such outlandish proposals have a role in history. The celebrated Catholic thinker Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira notes that the left uses programs like the Green New Deal to advance its agendas. It promotes extreme radicals that often fail in their goals in the short term. Petition against Catholic university's pro-abortion club reaches 35,000 signatures

A petition calling on a Catholic university to ban a pro-abortion student club recently garnered 35,000 signatures and will now be sent in to administrators.
Saint Louis University, a Catholic school in Missouri, is home to the pro-abortion student club If/When/How, which trains law students to advocate for pro-abortion legislation.
TFP Student Action, a group that works to “affirm the positive values of tradition, family and private property,” created the petition on its website in November. Director John Ritchie told
The Fix that once the petition garners 35,000 signatures, it will be sent to Saint Louis University.
As of Sunday night, it reached its goal with over 35,000 signatures, and Ritchie confirmed it’s being shipped off to the school. ....
