PLATTSBURGH â The new Ward 1 city councilor says, the need for change, led him to take on the role with the Plattsburgh City Common Council. I ve just come to the conclusion that Plattsburgh is going down the wrong way and that there is nothing here long-lasting for legacy,  Jaime Canales told the Press-Republican. Since I live here and my daughters matter to me, I want to do the best that I can to ensure that all children here, all of their lives matter and that they have a good system of support. . .
APPOINTMENT
The Ward 1 seat was previously held by Ira Barbell, whose three-year term started about a year ago on Jan. 1, 2020.

PLATTSBURGH â A unanimous decision of the Plattsburgh Town Board found the Lake City s requested annexation not in the public s best interest.
The vote came a couple weeks after the Plattsburgh City Common Council declared the action was in the public s best interest. In speaking with our special counsel, given the fact that the two municipalities are at odds, we are probably talking about several years in the court system, Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman said. This is far from being over. Â
THE ANNEXATION
The land in question is about 224 acres owned by the city, but located off of Rugar Street and Reeves Lane in the Town of Plattsburgh.Â

PLATTSBURGH â After months of throwing elbows, the Plattsburgh City Common Council came to a consensus Thursday night, closing out 2020 with an approved budget for next year, which features a modest tax cut. It s fair; it s equitable; it doesn t put people out of jobs; it s fiscally responsible, City Councilor Elizabeth Gibbs (D-Ward 3) said of the spending plan. It was the right thing to do to settle that before everyone goes away on Christmas â to know that they have a jobs.  Â
FINALIZED BUDGET
All five councilors voted to OK the $59.9 million spending plan at their final meeting of the year.Â
It offered up a tax rate of $11.41 per $1,000 of assessed property value, down $0.24, or more than 2 percent, from the current year.Â

PLATTSBURGH â City councilors passed a widely unpopular zoning law Thursday night, asserting it would have zero impacts on the controversial Durkee Street redevelopment project, which still awaits the actions of Plattsburgh City s Zoning and Planning boards. This is not in any way going to impact anything regarding the Prime project, City Councilor Elizabeth Gibbs (D-Ward 3) said of the pending Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) project. This is on its own a different law. Â
COUNTYÂ AGAINST
Councilors first voted on the local law, which would exempt city projects from some of its own zoning and planning reviews, back in October to send the then proposal before the Clinton County Planning Board.Â
