welcome to the programme. the war in eastern ukraine is turning into something of a stalemate. the pentagon says neither the russians nor the ukrainians have the troop numbers or firepower to win the battle of donbas, and instead, the conflict has settled into an attritional pattern of advance, counteroffensive and, in some places, russian withdrawals. there have been some morale boosting wins for the ukrainians around the northern city of kharkiv. they have taken back a number of towns to the north and east of the city, which at least has given kharkiv some relief from the russian artillery. further to the south, the russian advance on izyum is said to have stalled, and the russians have now pulled some troops back across their border, with around 20 battalions said to be massed closer to belgorod, on the russian side, to shore up the supply lines. for the ukrainians, they are tenuous advances, there s still intense fighting around all these areas, and in line with what the ....
