Staff report Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will teach a master class and give a presentation as part of the Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series at Youngstown State University. Costanzo has been described as “vocally brilliant and dramatically fearless” (The New York Times), “otherworldly” (The Wall Street Journal) and “a perfect musician” (Le Monde). Countertenors are men who have the vocal range of a woman alto. In the 1500s, men were castrated to maintain that range. During his “Tiny Desk” concert on National Public Radio, Costanzo joked, “I’ve managed to do it without castration.” Costanzo began performing professionally at the age of 11 and since has appeared in opera, concert, recital, film and on Broadway. His debut album, “ARC,” on Decca Gold was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award, and he was named Musical America’s 2019 vocalist of the year. ....
