First Black tobacco buyer from Southern Virginia discusses being a Black business owner in Danville


DANVILLE, Va. — From age 5 to age 20, Edward Ed Hairston lived through the Civil Rights Movement in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Now a small business owner on Riverside Drive, Hairston reflects on a life of entrepreneurship and forestalling prejudice in the hopes of accomplishing one immutable goal: to better the lives of those around him.
Hairston was born Nov. 21, 1948, as the seventh child of eight to the late C.P. and Mary L. Hairston. The spark of entrepreneurship was ignited during his early days in Pittsylvania County Schools, when Hairston would ride the bread truck to school—buying bread for a nickel and reselling it for a dime. ....

Hundreds of people were vaccinated Friday at Danville Community Market.

DANVILLE, Va. – With nearly 6,000 vaccinated already in the Danville and Pittsylvania County region, people over 65 and teachers eagerly waited to receive their first dose Friday.
Laying out bandages and setting up needles, volunteers got ready to administer 864 doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine.
“We are never going to get out of this nightmare unless we get 70 to 80 percent of the population vaccinated,” Vice Mayor of Danville Gary Miller said.
That’s why 91-year-old Louise Jefferson and 87-year-old Merlon Jefferson took the 20-minute drive from Dry Fork to Danville to get their vaccine. ....
