Statement by the ANSWER Coalition – Act Now to Stop War & End Racism
In response to the mobilization of tens of thousands of Palestinians to defend the right to live in the Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem and worship at the Al-Aqsa mosque, Israel has unleashed murderous actions all across occupied Palestine. Al-Aqsa is an iconic national symbol of the Palestinian people and one of the holiest sites in Islam, and has been repeatedly targeted by Zionist extremists who want to take it over.
The Israeli government has indicated that it is prepared for a drawn out military campaign against the Palestinian people. On May 10, a horrifically violent and desecrating attack on Al-Aqsa left more than 400 Palestinians wounded, with 250 suffering injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment. International Workers Day, May 1, is celebrated by tens of millions of people around the world. Its radical history emerged from the Haymarket Square resistance and the massacre that followed in 1886.
May Day was revived as a workers’ day by the immigrant rights movement in the United States in 2009. As the labor movement continues to blossom in the U.S., more and more people here now recognize International Workers Day, or “May Day.” Thousands of workers joined May Day events around the country this year despite the limitations presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On Nov. 7, Pennsylvania s vote had just been called for Joe Biden. Beeping horns and jubilant motorists marked the celebration. On a day with unseasonably warm weather, it was a good morning for a picket at the PNC Bank branch on East Carson Street on Pittsburgh s South Side.
The picketers rolled out their banner Stop Banking the Bomb and unpacked their signs. The pandemic had not yet reached epic proportions, and suburbanites coming into the city for a lazy morning brunch gave the picketers a fresh audience.
