Celebrating the opening of the librarys latest exhibition, magna carta, muse and a mentor. I think it is indisputable that the library of congress has a special relationship with magna carta. We remember, of course, this institutions good fortune to have been called upon to safeguard the lincoln magna carta during world war ii. But as a repository of the accumulated knowledge of human civilization, the library of Congress Must also be acknowledged to be one of the best assets the United States possesses for participation in magna cartas greatest legacy, the preservation of the rule of law. The library began over two centuries ago as the principle reference collection for legal research, both for the congress and the United States Supreme Court. It continues today to offer its unparalleled Legal Resources to all three branches of the United States government as well as to the governments of foreign states. This mission, the preservation of the rule of law, is inscribed on the very walls
Im the manuscripts librarian here at the california historic society. Im really excited about tonights program. Its my great pleasure to introduce our speaker, dr. Carlos Manuel Salomon tonight. He is a scholar working in the areas of borderland studies, social movements, oral history, and migration. This portrait of pico challenges the paradigm of the decline of the californians through which that experience has often been interpreted drawing a connection by the battles fought by k californians. Like many other early mexican settlers, pio pico was of african descent. The second nonnative settler was also of african descent. They were just not aware of the early african roots of california. This is an aspect of our history thats worthy of much greater interest and exploration, and im so honored and pleased that dr. Salomon will explore it with us here tonight. Please do stay after the program to chat about a copy of his wonderful book. His wife owns one of the best restaurants in oakla
