Lot of numbers coming in. big international effort. the united states involved, singapore and malaysia and japan. all involved in the recovery effort to find the victim but also try to find the bulk of the aircraft wreckage. one thing they are trying to do now is try to find the black boxes. they may be with the main part of the wreckage. they may not be. they have underwater microphones or towed pinger locaters. you may remember that term from the malaysia airline search story. those are emitting a signal to find the black boxes. listening for those pings. the important thing, john is that the batteries on the pingers are rated for a month. six or seven days in that means over three weeks left for them ....

Essentially they will be looking for the heavier, larger parts of the aircraft that are at this point sitting on the ocean floor. we do expect that perhaps the u.s. contribution will expand even more as the underwater search gets even bigger. take a listen to what the pentagon had to say earlier this morning about the search for the black boxes. as we ve made very clear, we re ready to help in any way that we can. we have assisted in these kinds of searches before unfortunately. so we have some experience at this. as you may recall with malaysia flight 370, we provided toad pinger locaters, underweight r underwater passive sonar devices used to try to help detect the pinging of the black boxes. those could be brought in. we have no request for that right now. and we have a side-scan sonar which we also used with malaysia flight 370 to try to help find ....

For help with sonars it s going to take week maybe even a month or more to respond to that to get mobilized oen edd on a ship and get the ship out there. even if it s a shorter distance than the malaysian air issue from land it will take a while to mobilize. the first thing you ve got to know is where are you looking? where is that haystack? are you going to listen for pings? should you go out now with pinger locaters and go to the last position and try your luck? it s a very horrible situation that we find ourselves in once more that a plane s gone into the water without us knowing exactly where it is. i want to talk to david more about the challenges of underwater searchers. why not go out with pingers? we ll ask him that ahead. and the specialized equipment that it may take to find the wreckage. underwater vehicles can go where humans can, humans can t go ....

And bring the rovs back. it s amazing the technology we have. and no toad pinger locaters. we don t have to use that? why. you do want to use toad pinger locaters but we do not need the huge systems for flight 37. because the pinger doesn t weigh much. but when you drop it down two miles or three miles, it s steel cable and electrical power and telemetry that weighs and it gets huge. so these smaller systems, we have hand-held systems and pingers on our robots. if we happen to lose a robot. we can put a pinger off the side of the boat and find it ourself. they re common. this area is the size of the state of georgia, it s a heavily traveled shipping route. we also know that there have been other incidents, disasters, sunken ferries and passenger ships, the battle of the sea of java happened here. there s a lot of debris already under there. how complex will it make their search efforts? ....

Of questions to know in a month or two when we find it on the ocean bottom. it is important to remember there s three different searches going on. the first is surface debris. it seems to me the australians are trying to move the area around to check places they haven t looked before. the second search for the pinger locaters. that s been successful. don t downplay the fact of solid contact. maybe within a week, the very meticulous search of the ocean bottom. you are not discouraged there isn t a redetection of that pinger song, last sound, in five days? no. again, when you look at the manufacturer said on the expected battery life, we are probably beyond that now and the australians are slow and debris. we heard it definitely or at least very sure we heard it last ....
