new urgency. reporter: it s been almost 40 years but tonight police believe they finally have their man. a 60-year-old registered sex offender arrested this weekend law enforcement sources tell the miami herald they suspect he s the pillowcase rapist. he is one of the most hated and hunted criminals in south florida history. he s called the pillowcase rapist. reporter: from 1981 to 86, the pillowcase rapist attacked at least4 women along florida s east coast one woman spoke of her attack at the time he put a pillow on top of my face, with a knife to my ribs. reporter: some victims as young as 17 years old. the oldest 82. a state sex crime psychologist was consulted by investigators the fact that it was heavily covered in the media over and over again, that made it more frightening. the fact the cops were trying their hardest to catch him and really had no clues. reporter: one creepy detail, the pillowcase rapist scrolled a message on one of his victim s bathroom mirror
a judge let out 70-year-old curtis reeves on $100,000 bond. reeves can only leave home for church, doctor s visits and going to the grocery store. he is accused of shooting and kiting 43-year-old chad olsen after olsen allegedly refused to stop texting during the movie previews. but his attorneys claim that their client acted in self-defense. and eric also frees who is known as the pillowcase rapist. christopher hubbard who admitted raping dozens of women was released from a mental hospital and is living outside a rural california community, despite neighbors protests. dominick donatelli joining us now from the l.a. bureau to tell us what s being done to keep a community safe from an admitted sexual predator. so can these protesters drive him away? they re certainly determined to do that. they re out there with bull horns and they are chanting day a night, at the moment. there was a group about 25 gathered. it s quite a small rural

she was raped as a child, lives in the next house over. having this man next to me is a terrible trigger for all that ugly stuff that happened to me. i won t be able to come out of my house now. every noise that i hear, i m going to be on high alert. that s not living. i feel now that we re basically the prisoners. reporter: these women vow to keep vigil outside of the house until hubbart leaves. hubbart fears strong women. he goes after the weak. he fears us. reporter: stephanie elam, cnn, palmdale, california. john walsh has spent much of his life tracking down criminals that target women and children. he is now the newest member of the cnn family. he joins me tonight. the pillowcase rapist. this guy, 40 rapes that we know about that he was convicted of. and yet he gets out. what do you make of it? well, i m a great advocate for undetermined civil confinement. that means if a guy is a child killer or a horrible serial rapist, a serial pedophile, he
