Federal Liberal backbencher Andrew Hastie has labelled his state counterpart’s cornerstone green energy election promise a “lemon” in a scathing assessment exposing a deep rift between the two West Australian arms of the party.
Federal Liberal MPs are fuming at a state party promise to reach net-zero government emissions by 2030 by shutting down all state coal power stations in Western Australia’s South West town of Collie by 2025.

Mr Kirkup’s promise stands in stark contrast to the federal government’s support for coal and its 2050 net-zero emissions target. The MPs also fear it has risked the votes of thousands of people in Collie and surrounds who are either directly or indirectly employed by the coal industry. ....

The WA Nationals are at odds with traditional bedfellows the Liberal Party over the latter’s plan to shut down state-owned coal plants by 2025.
The proposal formed part of the Liberals’ plan to bring state government emissions down to zero by 2030, which also included underwriting a $16 billion renewable energy project in the Mid West.
The Nationals have described the Liberals’ policy as ‘unrealistic’.

Collie is WA’s traditional home of coal and the policy will make it nearly impossible for the Liberals to take the marginal seat of Collie-Preston where thousands of voters are still connected to the industry in some way. ....
