School board vice chair takes new role as police officer

DANVILLE, Va. — Three years ago, Ty’Quan Graves made history as the youngest person ever elected to the Danville School Board at 20 years old. Now, Graves is looking to further engage the community through his new career as a Danville police officer. Graves, who was sworn into his new role on April 13 and graduated from the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Academy in Martinsville on April 16, said he decided on police work as a way to make an impact in his community.  Graves had been working and volunteering in the Danville school division after he graduated, but couldn’t do anything in the school system once he was elected to the board. He then went to Henry County schools and coached there, but he decided to return back to Danville.

New officer joins father on Danville Police force

DANVILLE, Va. — On April 13, history was made as Officer Bryanna McLaughlin joined the ranks of the Danville Police Department (DPD), where she will serve alongside her father Lt. Jeffrey McLaughlin. For the first time, a father and daughter will be members of the police department at the same time. Lt. McLaughlin joined the DPD in 1996, inspired by his own uncle’s law enforcement career. In his 24 years, he’s seen uncles and nephews, brothers, and other relatives serve together, but having his daughter also on the force is special. “For a father and daughter, for your daughter to be the one to follow in your footsteps, it means a lot,” he said.
